RESEARCH and CONSULTING |
My research has taken me in a number of directions over the years, but all of the work addresses communities and well-being and utilizes a social justice approach. Undertaken both in my former role as faculty member at Northwestern University and through my independent research and consulting firm, projects generally utilize a community-based participatory research methodology.
My current work is focused on community health improvement, building an understanding of the social determinants of health in communities, and deploying the principles and practices of asset-based community development in community building work. Past projects explored the importance of play in the lives of children, provided background research for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's focus on creating a culture of health, and contributed to the Ford Foundation's project on Philanthropy for Social Justice and Peace. |
Neighborhood Health Status Improvement: long-term consulting in Rochester, New York
I am currently in the thirteenth year of a long-term project in Rochester that uses asset-based community development principles and practices to help community groups improve the health status of their neighborhoods. Supported by the Greater Rochester Health Foundation (formerly through a research grant to Northwestern University; currently as an independent consultant), the work is place based, resident driven, and grassroots in orientation, and focused on the social determinants of health. By developing and implementing broad plans for health improvement that target the physical, social, and economic environments in each community, these initiatives are supporting neighborhood residents as they work to create settings in which it is possible to live healthy lives. Working alongside foundation staff and evaluators on a community-based participatory research design, I helped develop a logic model, indicators, measures, and processes as part of a study that will confirm the value of this long-term community investment.
